Nestled in the heart of the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park, Bretmoor combines Scottish Highland Cattle breeding with agroforestry: a farm that balances sound economics with care for the biodiversity of the land it works.
Our foundation fold came from the breed's homeland, from renowned Scottish folds (Cladich, Woodneuk). It arrived in the Chartreuse in December 2020, the very last import of Highland cattle into France before Brexit. Every animal is registered in the Highland Cattle Society Herd Book and holds a European Zootechnical Certificate.
In the foothills of the Alps, we favour practices that respect the hardiness of the breed. We breed at a measured pace, six calves a year, for breeding, conservation grazing or simply for pleasure.

L'esprit BretmoorThe Bretmoor way
Le lien avec nos animauxOur bond with the fold
Our Highlands are handled every day, calmly and close to people. That bond is what makes them gentle, easy to lead and easy to settle into a new fold.

Le troupeau en ChartreuseThe fold in the Chartreuse
Pastures on the edge of the forest, agroforestry and views of the Chartreuse cliffs: our hairy coos live outdoors all year round as a family, cows, calves and bull together, in winter sun and snow alike.
L'hiver à BretmoorWinter at Bretmoor
When snow covers the wooden gates and the woods of Coublevie, our Highlands stay outside: their double coat keeps out the cold.
Every spring our cows calve on their own, quietly, in the woods. More than once a mother has come to show us her newborn calf, right at our feet: the loveliest of gifts, and proof of the trust between us and our fold.
Woodland tracks, this year's calves, hay taken up to the field in the Traxter: everyday life at Bretmoor.

« The Bretmoor Fold – Rekindling the Auld Alliance in the French Alps! »
A two-page feature on our fold in the Highland Cattle Society's annual journal. It tells the story of Nancy, born in Hawick in the Scottish Borders, of Gilles, from the Sologne near Aubigny-sur-Nère, the “City of the Stuarts”, and of the birth of the Bretmoor Fold: a foundation fold chosen at Woodneuk and Cladich in summer 2020, which reached the Chartreuse in December 2020 as the very last Highland import into France before Brexit.

« Teri exile takes the Highland way to beef up French connection »
A full-page story in the paper of Nancy's home town about the birth of the Bretmoor Fold: the foundation fold chosen at Woodneuk, Barrhead, and Cladich, Argyll, which arrived in December 2020 among the last Highlands imported into France before Brexit. It also explains our name, Bret, the hamlet where we live, plus “moor”, and our tradition of naming calves after Scottish rivers, such as Slitrig and Teviot.
